    Nurse Authors...A Future for Nursing?

In May this year I attended the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association's Annual general Meeting and Conference. This years theme was "Advancing Nursing Practice: Where to from here?" I attended as a presenter setting up a poster display addressing advancing the profession through nurse authorship.

Many attendees told me they enjoyed the presentation, were very interested in the types of books and other printed materials authored by nurses, but a recurrent comment was, "I can't write!"

Ok, now, back up a minute here; if you are a nurse you HAVE written many reports, small stories and non-fiction reports based on research and facts.

    It's called charting!

This process is a huge part of any nurses daily work, so there is no grounds for any nurse saying they do not know how to write.

The next question then is, "Is there money to be had as a nurse author?"

Yes, I know many nurses seem to have this apparent aversion to accepting money from anyone but their employer, but you must realize that your EXPERIENCE and EXPERTISE is worth paying for.

So, can you make money as a nurse author?

Of course you can, and there are many examples out there for you to see.

You may not be able to make a full time living at it, but writing has many benefits besides a financial one. Writing, or journaling, is in itself therapeutic as a way to deal with stress and it can also a method of teaching.

Amazon Books is a great place to get a clearer look at just how many nurse authors there are and what subjects they are writing about.

Why shouldn't you be on this list?

    Amazon Books

Traditional publishing houses are no longer the only way you can see your dream as a writer come to life. Many authors today successfully self-publish and are then sometimes found by traditional publishers after the fact.

While attending the SRNA AGM and Conference I had the opportunity to meet Suzanne Gordon. She has authored many books about nursing, the latest being, "When Chicken Soup Isn't Enough"

This book is a must read for any nurse interested, not only in writing but getting out real stories about real nursing.

    When Chicken Soup Isn't Enough

One of the easiest ways to self publish is by turning your writing in to an e-Book. If you have Microsoft Office software on your computer all you need to do is save your writing as a pdf document. No fancy and expensive software required.

Where do you sell your book?

I have my books on 2 sites:

    www.lulu.com
    www.offthebookshelf.com

    Lulu.com

So can you make money as a nurse author?

    Yes!

Whether you write to inform health care consumers about disease, illness or healthy lifestyle changes, increase working knowledge of other nurses, or let your creativity run wild in an amateur detective novel writing is something every nurse should do.
