The Nurse Sentry, Issue #0208 -- New Year News February 21, 2008 |
| Dear subscriber The Nurse Sentry e-zine brings you some of the latest news about nursing issues around the world. As the back bone of every health care system, nursing professionals have powerful influences on governments and health care consumers alike. Are we using this power to its fullest and in the right ways? What else could we be doing?
This E-newsletter is designed for all nurses to share their voice and input, keeping abreast of what is happening with the nursing profession all around the world.
Global Nursing IssuesI spend a lot of time researching on what is happening in nursing around the globe. I feel it's important to look outside my own comfort zone of what I know here in Canada and take a hard look at what nurses in other countries are dealing with. Not to say nursing in Canada is actually comfortable. We too suffer from staff shortages, rural areas more so than the cities. But now even the larger hospitals and even Public Health agencies are feeling the pinch.
Many Canadian nurses are lured away to the United States by offers of huge money "sign on" bonuses. Plus, many of the "not for profit" centers in the USA can offer FREE continuing education. Some even offer on-site BN programs. Canada seems to be heading in that direction. Some cities are offering Critical Care training plus a salary in return for a year or more of service. Needless to say it helps their staffing situation as well as offers nurses a chance for more education when they could not find the money funds to do it themselves.
Male Nurses Scarce in ChinaThis story, and other nursing stories, are available on www.thenewsroom.com Have nursing issues you would like to share? International Council of NursesThe International Council of Nurses web site is a great resource to help keep you up to date on issues of health and the nursing profession around the world. Nursing students...there is a chat / bulletin board area where you can ask questions and get answers from other nursing students. Very insightful indeed.
I will report later on what I found out about issues of violence with nurses in Turkey, as well as the nurse to patient ratios in hospitals in Israel.
