Maternity Nursing
Specializing in maternity nursing will keep each work day an exciting new adventure. Working in helping to bring new life to the world makes coming to work each day a pleasure indeed. You also get the opportunity to help new parents learn to feed their newborns, even give them skills in early parenting and care techniques. It can certainly make each day fun and very fulfilling. The daily routines (if you can call them routine) include setting up the delivery rooms, coaching new moms through labor, administering pain medicines, etc as need arises and cleaning up after the delivery. Patient stays are usually quite short (usually less than 48 hours). There are challenges of course. Trying to insert an IV in to a woman having strong contractions, with little time between them, will get you learning some swift techniques. and what if things go bad? The death of a new born, or the mom, can be devastating for everyone. It can happen, and does, so you must be mentally prepared. Thank goodness that with todays health care technology this is not a too frequent occurrence. Now I know the practices of nurses in maternity nursing is different in many countries. Differences in cultural beliefs and practices as well as financial stabilities (or instabilities) can make many situations challenging for nurses.
