Continuing education has become a new focus for many registering bodies recently within Canada and the USA. In the United States registering bodies require nurses to obtain a minimum number of "contact hours" of education each year. Luckily, many larger hospitals provide opportunities free of charge to their employees. Canada has followed suit, requiring nurses to partake in "continuing competency programs". It is self directed, requiring you to record your learning objectives each year, as well as get peer feedback.
It is becoming mandatory for all nurses to keep records of these as well.
Check with the board of registered nursing for your state / province as they may have sources for continuing education credits, or check out the sources listed below.
Online Baccalaureate and Masters degrees are now widely available for nurses who wish to further their already extensive training. These nursing distance education programs have become popular for several reasons;
It allows nurses to continue working and collect an income
Education, as finances allow. Nursing education has become extremely expensive so being able to learn at home, a course at a time, is the only way some people can afford to go back to school
